Is this former Manchester United striker the best player in the world? Kick London’s Joe Lowther takes a closer look.
Cristiano Ronaldo has now become Real Madrid’s highest goalscorer scoring at faster than a goal a game with 324 goals in 310 games. He has surpassed the great Raul’s previous record that was 323 goals in 741 games. Twice as fast and in only 5 seasons! This season he will overtake the best the Premier League could provide with Alan Shearer’s 260 league goals and again in less than half the time. Of Ronaldo’s total goals scored he has banged in 56 with the left foot, 220 with the right foot, and a staggering 48 headers.
His ratios per season read like this:
2009-10 – 33
2010-11 – 53
2011-12 – 60
2012-13 – 55
2013-14 – 51
2014-15 – 61
2015-16 – 11 so far
That’s an average of 52 goals a season. To put this into perspective the famous Brazilian Ronaldo averaged 21 goals in his 5 seasons at Madrid.
Some incredible stats here…

Who is the greatest ever player?
Who do you think is the best player playing today?
Who do you think is better Ronaldo or Messi?
Greatness? Surely regardless of how good Messi is. Ronaldo is a footballing great. With his 28 hat-tricks, 3 times scoring 4 and on top of that twice he has scored 5 times in a single match. The guy’s got it. What a player.

All those dreams as a little kid we have of scoring in a Champions League Final (he’s done this twice), lifting major trophies (16 and counting) or being crowned Balon d’Or winner (3 times). He’s done it all. However, with the world at his feet and new fans every day, his greatness is still in question.
If we compared ourselves to this greatness and these achievements then probably deep down we’d love to be in his position. However, this is not the standard that really counts. This is not the greatness which leads to true fulfilment. This is greatness which fades, which is supplanted, which is bettered, which, dare I say it, is forgotten. Greatness can only be measured by one man – Jesus Christ. He was truly perfect and without fault. No one can emulate Him, no one can break his records, no matter the effort. Only through relinquishing our dreams and talents to him can we really find our purpose and bask in his glory.
Colossians 1:16-18 NIV
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”
As much as we might admire Ronaldo/Messi/Zidane/Pele we must remember that the object of our true worship, the one who has absolute supremacy, the one who is worthy of all honour, praise and chanting from the stands is Jesus Christ. The ultimate finisher!
