For most of us, playing on a Sunday morning becomes a regular part to our lives. As Christians, is it alright to miss church to play for our football team?
God gives us talents. For some of us, football is a talent and we’re constantly playing on a Saturday or Sunday. However, we should be thinking on whether our footballing talent is taking over our church life. If we’re regularly playing on a Sunday, are we honouring God?
It depends where our hearts are. If you start to really think about this and maybe you’re feeling nervous about dis-honouring God, then that’s a great thing; the Holy Spirit is talking to you. If you’re not feeling this, don’t panic because maybe now is the time to start really praying and thinking over what you should be doing every Sunday.
There is a way to balance your football and church life. Perhaps you only commit to playing the ‘beautiful game’ three or a couple of times a month. Overall, our hearts should be wanting to desire God. If that’s not the case, don’t fear, pray about this to God and read over his word. Let him talk to you. As Christians, we grow in relationships with God and Church is a great thing to be part of; we can be around our fellow brothers and sisters and also we can feel part of that ‘church family’. Perhaps you could go to your local evening service.
In Matthew 6:33 it says:
“But seek his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.
Pray about this topic with God. Let him talk to you and show you what he wants. Remember, God has given you this gift of football and wants you to use it! Glorify in him when you use it.
